Admission Procedure
  • Assam University has 2 research programmes: Master of Philosophy ( M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). Both the programmes have 2 parts: (a) Course Work or (b) Dissertation / Thesis.
  • Each academic department shall organize a C-RET (Combined Research Eligibility Test) comprising 2 sections: (i) Research Methodology / Research Aptitude, (ii) Subject Knowledge. The C-RET will be followed by a Personal Interview (PI).
  • Applicant must secure 50 % marks in the C-RET (as per UGC Regulations, 2016) to qualify for Personal Interview. JRF /NET/ SLET/ M.Phil qualified applicant will also have to appear in the C-RET and PI.
  • All selected M.Phil and Ph.D applicants must pursue a one-semester Course Work which will be credit-based. Applicants with M.Phil degree from this university or any other applicants university/institute with explicit proof of qualifying in the course Work of a minimum one semester duration with atleast 55% marks in aggregate and its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7- point scale can also apply in the prescribed form for Provisional Registration to Ph.D Course directly without pursuing a fresh Course Work if selected on the basis of their performance in the C-RET or Personal Interview.
Eligibility Criteria For the M. PHIL  Programme

  • Applicants for admission to the M. Phil. Programme will have a Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate and its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 – point scale an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved or authorized by an authority or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% or an equivalent relaxation of grade shall be allowed for those belonging to SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer)  and other categories of applicants as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The marks of 55% and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only
Eligibility Criteria For PH.D. Programme

The following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph. D. programme:

  • Master’s Degree holders satisfying stipulated for admission to the M. Phil.
  • The rules for relaxation of 5% will be the same as mentioned in the eligibility for admission to the M. Phil. Programme.
  • Applicants who have cleared the M. Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in UGC 7-point scale or successfully completing the M. Phil.
  • The Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC / differently – able and other categories of applicants as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
